The Zululand Birding Route

The Zululand Birding Route is a project of BirdLife SA, focused on conserving birds and their habitats by promoting and developing birding tourism in the region. The Zululand Birding Route is currently managed under the Birdlife SA Rio Tinto Avitourism programme which is helping conserve birds in Zululand by giving them direct financial value.

With 600 species recorded, the Zululand Birding Route is southern Africa’s BIRDING DIVERSITY HOTSPOT! A network of 14 self-drive routes offer a range of great birding localities that will thrill the most seasoned birder. For convenience these are grouped into three regions.

Southern Kwazulu Natal Birding Route

The Southern KwaZulu-Natal Birding Route takes you from the golden beaches and lush forests of South Africa’s North and South Coastlines through the beautiful Lowveld and up to the spectacular heights of the Drakensberg Mountains. The variety of habitat and a bird list in excess of 550 species including many rare and endemic species such as Blue Swallow, Cape Parrot, Drakensberg Rock-jumper, Eurasian Bittern, all three Southern African Crane Species, Bearded Vulture and more make this Birding Route an unforgettable South African journey for any birding enthusiast.

Limpopo Birding Route

The Limpopo Province, with its vast unexplored areas and diverse habitats, offers one of the most exciting birding destinations in Southern Africa.  Habitats range from vast tracts of montane grassland to afro-temperate forests, bushveld and wetlands.

This is an ideal destination for both the beginner and the experienced birder.  The abundance of birds will always make a short trip to the region well worthwhile.  The area boasts 35 Southern African endemics and 48 Southern African near endemics. 

Over 600 bird species have been recorded in the province of which 420 are resident.  The area offers pleasant and easy bird watching, but if you are chasing species see the Regional Specials and our 'Big 10' hit list for each sub-route
